Eligibility & Expectations

Who’s Eligible and What’s My Role?

HKU non-local students (including exchange and visiting students for one semester)

*Priority will be given to those staying in Hong Kong for one year or more.

Each non-local pal will be paired up with 1 local foodmate and 1 host family.

  1. Non-local pals are expected to:
    • join a homey meal with their local foodmates in the local host family;
    • take initiative to communicate with their local foodmates and host families; and
    • submit photos of gatherings and provide feedback on the Programme.
  2. Non-local pals will not be provided with accommodation by the host families and local foodmates.
  3. Non-local pals are not required to pay the host families and local foodmates but you may have to pay for the family gatherings organised by CEDARS and bear any personal expenses incurred during the family gatherings and activities such as transportation costs.

HKU local undergraduates or postgraduates

Each local foodmate will be paired up with 1 to 2 non-local pal(s) and 1 host family throughout the semester. Most of the non-local students are staying in Hong Kong for one year or more, but some may be exchange or visiting students staying in Hong Kong for one semester only.

  1. Local foodmates are expected to:
    • take initiative to contact the non-local pal(s) and host and connect them;
    • help arrange and join a homey meal with the non-local pal(s) in the local host family;
    • accompany the non-local pal(s) in most (if not all) of the family meals and gatherings and facilitate their cultural exchange with the host families; and
    • submit photos of gatherings and provide feedback on the Programme.
  2. Local foodmates are not required to pay the host families but you may have to pay for the family gatherings organised by CEDARS and bear any personal expenses incurred during the family gatherings and activities such as transportation costs.

HKU local alumni, current undergraduates or postgraduates

To enrich non-local students’ cultural learning and facilitate their adaptation to the life in Hong Kong, you will host 1-2 non-local pal(s) and their local foodmate(s) throughout the semester. Most of the non-local students are staying in Hong Kong for one year or more, but some may be exchange or visiting students staying in Hong Kong for one semester only.

You are encouraged to invite your students to occasional gatherings and activities, such as family meals, parties, sightseeing tours and celebrations of traditional festivals.

  1. Host families are invited to:
    • arrange at least one homey meal for your non-local student(s) and local foodmate(s);
    • arrange other family gatherings and activities to foster culture exchange and integration; and
    • provide feedback on the Programme.
  2. Host families are not required to provide accommodation for the students.
  3. There will be no subsidy or allowance provided. Host families will need to bear the expenses of the homey meal(s), family gatherings and activities.
