The SERVICE 100 Week aims to promote and encourage efforts on the eradication of global poverty among HKU members. During the week, a range of activities that call for the action, reflection and sharing of good practices in fighting against poverty worldwide by HKU students, colleagues and alumni will be organised.

Understanding Poverty

Kick-off Ceremony of SERVICE 100 Week
- Pledge for Poverty Eradication

The ceremony kicks off the series of activities during SERVICE 100 Week. Outstanding students, staff and alumni who are active in community service will share their service missions with the audiences. Prize Presentation Ceremony of the SERVICE 100 Photo Competition and Survival Tools Contest of the “Engineers Without Borders Hong Kong” will take place in addition to the Award Presentation Ceremony of SERVICE 100 Fund.

Performance by MOSAIC (HKU A Cappella Group), photo-taking with Mascot and SERVICE 100 souvenirs will be given away.

SERVICE 100 Fair

The SERVICE 100 Fair aims to promote the service spirit of HKU, which is one of the three themes of HKU centenary celebration, and provide a platform for students, staff and alumni to demonstrate how they have been serving across the world. A number of student teams and NGOS will be invited to introduce their service opportunities at the fair. Through the event, HKU members will be reassured of their roles and continuous efforts in serving and leading to serve both local and global communities.

At the fair, the “Engineers Without Borders Hong Kong” will also hold an exhibition of the winning pieces of its Survival Tools Contest at the covered area outside main library.

Students are welcome to share their efforts towards the Millennium Development Goals by submitting a photo of their service projects that took place during 1 January – 30 September, 2012.

The 8 photo categories are:

  1. Achieve universal primary education
  2. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
  3. Develop a global partnership for development
  4. Ensure environmental sustainability
  5. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  6. Improve maternal health
  7. Promote gender equality and empower women
  8. Reduce child mortality

Action Against Poverty
“Bring A Book & Share” Read-Cycling* Used Book Donation Campaign

Are you finding space for good old books?

Used books of over 70% new in condition are welcome. Each book accepted by Read-Cycling will be given a stamp worth of HK$10 to be used in the “Bring A Book & Share“. All proceeds after deduction of necessary expenses will be used to buy new books for local communities in need.

* Read-Cycling is a government-registered NGO that aims at promoting the sharing and joy of reading.

Soap Cycling Workshop (FULL)

Soap Cycling is a nonprofit organisation based in Hong Kong that works towards the promotion of better sanitation in the less developed areas by recycling slightly used soap and sanitation amenities and distributing them to the underprivileged communities around the world, particularly in Asia. It is the first organisation of this kind in Asia, and is operated largely by student volunteers from HKU. In the workshop, participants will learn the carving of a soap flower, the recycling process of used soap and how Soap Cycling was founded, its missions and vision.

Outstanding student service leaders who have been actively working on poverty eradication will introduce their project ideas and share their endeavour at the service knowledge exchange and networking sessions.

Students are welcome to learn from these experienced and outstanding student leaders, and join their service initiatives to work together in building a world without poverty.  Through idea exchange and networking, students can build up a community with cooperative and continuous effort to fight against poverty or any global problem that confronts all mankind.
