Joy to Live – A Home Improvement Project for Subdivided Flat Residents

Soaring property price in Hong Kong has made the city be ranked world’s No 1 for unaffordable housing in the past years. Many low-income or grassroots families have no choices but squeeze their members into very small partitions or cubicles, called subdivided flats, that are always prone to a wide range of social, health and safety issues. In this project, students will form teams that comprise different academic disciplines or talents to conduct the first comprehensive survey of subdivided flats in the Southern District and design projects to improve the living environment (e.g. learning environment for children, home safety and health) of residents in the subdivided flats. An installation exhibition will also be held to let the public see, feel and touch the living environment of the subdivided flats and reflect on this housing situation in Hong Kong.
